The Vikings rebuilding process continued on Saturday as the team released veteran players Steve Hutchinson, Anthony Herrera, and Cedric Griffin.
All 3 players have dealt with injuries over the past few years and don’t fit into the Vikings plans long-term. The release of these players will save the Vikings just over 13 million on the salary cap and should put them in a good position to make a run at some free agents.
Free agency begins on Tuesday and although the salary cap number hasn’t been released yet, the Vikings should be looking at about 23 million under the cap.
So what does the release of Hutchinson and Herrera mean? I’ve already seen people ask about some of the top free agent guards but I have a hard time seeing Spielman take that route.
Spielman hasn’t been shy about a youth movement and sitting at pick number 3 the Vikings are in prime position to take LT Matt Kalil. Kalil would allow Charlie Johnson to move inside and Joe Berger/Brandon Fusco likely to compete for the other guard spot.
A offensive line of Kalil, Johnson, Sullivan, Berger/Fusco, and Loadholt would actually looked quite good on paper. As of now it’s all speculation with what the Vikings will do in free agency and the draft but Kalil is looking more likely by the day.
