At 3-5, Are the Chargers Done?

Gates pulled down
Sitting at 3-5, the Chargers have fallen a long way from the AFC Championship Game Appearance of a year ago. What happened? Is LT more injured than we think? Is Shawne Merriman being injured having a bigger effect that originally thought? Apparently so, because they fired Defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell this week and replaced him with Ron Rivera. But, can many people’s preseason Super Bowl pick, mine included, make the playoffs? Let’s look.

Denver is 4-3, leading the AFC West. There’s no reason the Charges can’t overcome that deficit. If Rivers continues to perform, LT gets healthy fast, they can get back on the right track. That might be the easiest way to make the playoffs, as the Wild Card race is heated. The loser of the AFC East, either Buffalo or New England is a cinch to make it. The Jets and Ravens both have 4-3 records. They are contenders. Tough for the Chargers to leap all those teams.

What do I think? I don’t think they are done. If Rivera inspires this D, they can get back to themselves. They still have a great Offense, the best in the AFC. If that Offense continues to deliver, the D steps it up, I think they will overtake Denver, who have given up the third most points in the AFC, and win the West. If they don’t, Norv Turner’s job security will be at risk.
