Well week 1 of the preseason is coming to a close and there have been a lot standouts and a lot of falters. Many players are fighting for the starting job and some did better than others. A few I saw during this week I’d like to point out are:
Robert Meachem, Saints receiver
Matt Ryan, Falcons quarterback
Chris Johnson, Titans running back
Robert Meachem is in his second year in the NFL. He was injured before the start of the season last year, hurting himself during workouts. He spent the offseason training with veteran receiver David Patton. During the first preseason game against the Cardinals, Meachem put up some great numbers. He hauled in 4 catches for 129 yards and one TD. His longest was a magnificent catch for 60 yards. This 2nd year receiver looks to be a stand out contribution to the return of the Saints to glory and the post season. The Saints won their first preseason match up 24-10.
Matt Ryan is in his rookie season coming out of Boston College. He was drafted number three overall in the 2008 NFL Draft. Drafted to the Falcons, he was instantly thrust into the spotlight as the face of the new beginning of a faltering franchise. He got his first taste of the NFL in the Falcons first preseason game against Jacksonville. Although the Falcons lost that game barely, 20-17, Ryan was still able to shine. Ryan put up 9 completions in 15 attempts for 113 yards. He did connect with Roddy White for his first NFL touchdown. If Ryan can carry on this level of performance throughout his rookie season, the Falcon’s rebuilding efforts can be quite fruitful.
Chris Johnson was the fastest running back in the 2008 NFL Draft. He was drafted in the first round out of East Carolina to the Tennessee Titans. His first test was Saturday against the St. Louis Rams and Johnson excelled. Johnson had six carries for a total of 77 yards and his first NFL touchdown. His biggest accomplishment in the 34-13 rout of the Rams was his break out 66-yard run up the middle against the struggling team. Johnson looks to be a star and will be dangerous in the backfield for sure. With runs like that, the Titans have a shot in winning the AFC South this year over the Colts. There were many players that had great games and there are three more games for them to do so, and everyone is watching them to do big things.
