If you are Sedrick Ellis, Ryan Clady or Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie please stop checking your mailbox, your invitation to New York City and the NFL draft is not coming. You may want to follow in the footsteps of last years number 3 pick Joe Thomas and go fishing.
The league’s brain trust have sent out only six invites to New York City for the Draft on April 26. In what is really no surprise the list of invitees are, LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey, Ohio State linebacker Vernon Gholston, Virginia defensive end Chris Long, Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long, Arkansas running back Darren McFadden and Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan.
One would think that there would not be anybody left from that list past the tenth pick in the draft. I have seen various mock drafts where either of the Long’s goes first or even Vernon Gholston to the Fins.
Regardless there should not be an Aaron Rodgers or Brady Quinn in this group of prospects. Rodgers the highly touted QB out of California slipped all the way to the 24th pick in 2005. Still he was the second overall quarterback taken that year. Quinn the All-American golden boy out of Notre Dame was expected to go in the top 10 before slipping to the 22nd pick and being taken by the Cleveland Browns after they made a trade to acquire the pick from the Dallas Cowboys.
In 2005 Rodgers was the last invited player to be chosen spending sixteen picks by himself in the green room before being chosen. Quinn came a close second to that in 2007 spending fifteen picks by himself being the last invitee taken that year.
Rodgers as you know by now unless you’ve been under a rock has the daunting task of replacing the legend Brett Favre in Green Bay. Quinn, well he will battle Derek Anderson for the starting job in Cleveland this year.
Of the 2008 invitees I could see Matt Ryan as the one to slip but I don’t think it would be much past the Baltimore Ravens at the number 8 pick.
