More Weapons Needed for Eagles to Take the Next Step

While a lot of talk with the Eagles these days seems to surround the future of QB Donovan McNabb and if the team is going to move him, those are just rumors and shouldn’t be taken seriously. McNabb is going to be the starting QB when the 2008 season opens, no question about it. The team drafted Kevin Kolb for the future, but the future for the Eagles is not now. As a matter a fact, McNabb has done more than enough to earn the QB spot for the Eagles for at least the next two seasons.

There are issues with the offense that need to be tweaked for this season, as in 2007 they simply missed too many chances to get into the end zone when they got down there. It seemed like each and every time they got in the red zone, and they did get there a lot, they were not able to make it those final yards, and then they would either have to settle for a field goal or even worse would turn it over.

This offseason there is a chance for the team to turn that around, but they are going to have to do a few things to do it. First, time to throw out the playbook when it comes to the red zone. They showed last season that it simply didn’t work, and it’s time to start looking at the more successful teams around the league and how they got it done inside the 20. If it means new personal on the field when the time comes, do it. Whatever the case may be, the team has to make changes in that department.

Another thing that will help is the infusion of some new players via the draft and free agency. The Eagles have become flat out stale on offense, and despite the again great season from Brian Westbrook, the team is not very creative and needs some impact players, especially at the wide out spot. Making a deal for a quality wide out, or drafting one high or getting one in free agency would help this team long term.

So as the offseason gets into full swing, the Birds have a lot of work to do. As they look back at the 2007 season, getting that red zone offense going once again and making sure everyone knows that McNabb will under center when it starts are two things the team has to make sure it does in order to get back to form.
