Free agency continues, and here is another set of recent moves with some thoughts:
Tully Banta-Cain signs with the 49’ers – San Fran continues to spend, spend, spend, and why not? They entered free agency with the most money of any team, and now have signed five free agents in the past five days. They continued to stress defense with the signing of Banta-Cain, who shunned a few other teams to sign with the team he grew up next to. A decent linebacker who in 54 games in 4 years was a three year starter. He totaled 90 tackles, 1 interception, and 8.5 sacks in the past four seasons with New England. Another good move by the 49’ers.
Jeremy Newberry signs with the Raiders – It’s no secret that the Raiders need help everywhere, and that includes the offensive line. Getting Newberry, a Pro Bowler with the 49’ers in 2001-02 is a likely wasted move, as he has played in just 11 games over the past three seasons because of various injuries. If Newberry can stay healthy, he can contribute, as he can play center, tackle, and guard. The big question as he turns 31 this month is can he get back on the field?
Luke Petitgout signs with the Buccaneers – Cool Hand Luke is a solid signing for the Bucs, who need help at tackle. Petitgout spent the last eight years with the New York Giants, and has appeared in 113 games, making 1-6 starts. The 30-year-old did miss part of last season after suffering a broken leg on November 12th vs the Bears, but is expected to be ready to go for this season and should make an impact for the Bucs.
