The New Orleans Saints just agreed to a deal to bring back suspended head coach Sean Payton to the tune of about $8 million a year. In a recently-released team photo (CLICK ON IT FOR A LARGER VERSION), the Saints players and coaches have Sean Payton-style visors on.
That salary makes Sean Payton the highest-paid coach or manager of any of the four major professional sports leagues. New England Patriots HC Bill Belichick gets close to $7.5m a year, with St. Louis Rams HC Jeff Fisher, Seattle Seahawks HC Pete Carroll and Washington Redskins HC Mike Shanahan estimated to be receiving around $7m a year. Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers is considered to be the highest-paid, non-NFL coach, making around $7m a year for his job in the NBA. These are all estimates, as coaching salaries are private.
What GM Mickey Loomis, Payton and his staff have done for the Saints has been unprecedented. In the 39 seasons before Payton took over, the Saints had just 13 non-losing seasons and a 1-7 record in the postseason. With a win against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, the Saints will have had 6 non-losing seasons since Payton was hired in 2006. Payton has a 5-3 record in the postseason, winning at least 1 game in 3 of 4 appearances. He was head coach when the Saints won Super Bowl XLIV over the Indianapolis Colts.
