Jets HC Rex Ryan said Sunday, after an embarrassing 30-9 home loss to the Dolphins in which they scored just one touchdown- that they are sticking with QB Mark Sanchez as the starter through the bye.
For all of QB Tim Tebow’s alleged faults – he can’t throw accurately, he makes bad decisions, he has bad mechanics, he’s too upbeat, he doesn’t explain what Jesus accomplished or what he is offering as clearly as Christians are supposed to (lyrics here) – he has only 15 career starts (including postseason), and you have to wonder if he’d get sacked and fumble as much as Sanchez has this season (Sanchez has lost 3 fumbles in his last five games and has been sacked 4 times in back-to-back weeks). Sanchez, albeit without good protection or good receivers for much of the year, has completed less than 50% of his passes in four of his eight games this year.
Rex says he won’t make a change. “I believe in all of our players, and I believe in Mark. I think Mark has proven that he can win in this league. I think he gives us our best chance to win. That’s my opinion and that’s the one that matters,” Rex said. While I believe him that he won’t switch to Tebow, perhaps – if he does make a change – the element of surprise would help in an unannounced quarterback switch.
I feel like if they won’t even give any tryouts this week to receivers like Terrell Owens, Chad Johnson or T.J. Houshmandzadeh, they may as well throw Tim Tebow out there at QB so they have another option when their young receivers do the inevitable: Stay covered. In a game in which they trailed by several scores most of the game, starting WR’s Jeremy Kerley and Stephen Hill combined for 7 receptions for 72 yards and not even one touchdown between them. That’s unacceptable. A divisional game, at home, when you gotta pass to catch up.
The frustration of Jets fans is beginning to boil over, and some have even started campaigns to demand that Tannenbaum and Ryan make Tebow the starter. At 3-5, they don’t have much to lose.
