So, ESPN’s Jon Gruden is rumored to become the next head coach for the Tennessee Volunteers in the SEC.
Gruden just spoke with HBO this summer about how much he misses coaching.
Gruden: “I’m trying to figure out where I’m going. If the right opportunity presents itself, I will come back.” He makes about $7m a year at ESPN.
One benefit to taking the job would be that there would occasionally be “the Sheriff” he loves so much, Broncos QB Peyton Manning, there on the sidelines. Maybe he could convince him to be offensive coordinator after he retires.
The rumor was started by a guy who has made 2880 posts on 8thMaxim.com. He claims that University of Tennessee and Gruden have made an agreement and that tumbling head coach Derek Dooley is either going to resign or be let go before the start of next season.
This all sounds like wishful thinking but:
A. Gruden was reportedly interested in the job before, Tennessee contacted him, but they were allegedly apart on money
B. Gruden’s first coaching job was there
C. Gruden met his wife, a Tennessee cheerleader, there
The biggest “evidence” found yet happened on Saturday when a member of the financial group B.W. Fullington & Associates posted this pic of Jon Gruden he claims is proof of Gruden watching the Tennessee vs. South Carolina game on a flight.
My guess is that Jon Gruden will take the Buffalo Bills job and a top QB (something he never had in Tampa) in the first round of the NFL Draft, and that Bill Cowher will take the Browns job and a top QB (something he rarely had in Pittsburgh) in the first round.
Gruden probably won’t address the rumors tonight during the telecast, out of respect for Derek Dooley. Even if he denies that he is leaving Monday Night Football, he can always say later that he “changed his mind”.
