Olindo Mare, Josh Brown and Kai Forbath will be taking part in the kicking competition in Washington today.
Mare and Brown are trusted vets. Mare played with Hall of Fame QB Dan Marino in Miami from 1997-1999. Forbath was undrafted out of UCLA in 2011 and has yet to play in a regular season NFL game.
Free agent K Graham Gano was 31 of 41 last season for the Redskins, but – by my count – 5 of those kicks were blocked.
Robert Griffin III has shown no signs of lingering symptoms, yet the more we find out about concussions, CTE, and sub-concussed protein sludge, it seems like NFL teams should be – at least with their most valuable players – taking extra precaution after each player gets a head injury.
Concussions have an incremental effect, and it seems players that hurry back into the lineup can get another one – Aaron Rodgers, Laurent Robinson, Austin Collie – soon after.
Week 4 Rookie of the Week RGIII is #1 in the NFL in completion percentage (69.1%; the opposing QB this Sunday, Christian Ponder, is second with 69.0%), and perhaps is the best QB to enter the NFL since Aaron Rodgers in 2005. I wouldn’t want to risk that. The Redskins should sit him even if he is showing no “lingering effects”. His importance goes far beyond the 2012 season.
Shanahan wouldn’t say if Kirk or Rex Grossman would take the reins if Robert Griffin III can’t go.
Some would argue that, with Orakpo and Carriker on IR, the Redskins don’t have the defense for a deep postseason run, anyway.
If they hurry Griffin back only to go 0-4 against the Giants (who have incredible depth) and Cowboys (DT Jay Ratliff and OLB Anthony Spencer are returning for them), it would truly be foolish on every level.
