ESPN is reporting that Saints QB Drew Brees asked the NFL for permission for suspended head coach Sean Payton, GM Mickey Loomis and assistant coach Joe Vitt to attend Sunday night’s home game against the Chargers. The NFL said “yes”. There had been confusion about a perceived double standard with suspended Rams DC Gregg Williams attended a St. Louis game. Brees will attempt to set a record for most consecutive games with a TD pass. He’s currently tied with Johnny Unitas with 57.
There have been times (like when he made a harsh statement about former players wasting their money) where Brees has come across a little egotistical – probably a good trait for a quarterback -, but this is a phenomenally brilliant move. I’m COMPLETELY CERTAIN that Drew Brees SOLD IT as a personal, emotional moment between him and the coaches who helped him achieve this personal accomplishment.
I’m also COMPLETELY CERTAIN that Drew wanted to do this as a way to get his teammates to hit a new level. If they were in dire need of an emotional boost, knowing their coaches and GM are in the crowd might help them reach it. Drew, the consummate leader, will do anything to get the Saints their first win.
In several games this year, the Saints were really near the mountain of victory. Their losses have been by 8 points, 8 points, 3 points and 1 point.
One may wonder when and if all the evidence for Bountygate is to be released and when clarity will be reached. Fans of the other 31 teams seemed to enjoy the pace and consistency of the games last Sunday as the regular refs returned. I doubt Goodell thought the fallout from Bountygate with the appeals would last this long. Saints fans probably just want to know how many games to anticipate LB Jonathan Vilma and Will Smith for.
