Grizzled, 37 year-old veteran QB Matt Hasselbeck is set to start. He’s 1-3 lifetime against the Vikings, but this is a different Minnesota team he’s playing. Hasselbeck was 9-7 as starter for the Titans last season with no off-season, but failed to stay in some of his games because of injury.
The Vikings have just one interception in 2012 but have only allowed a mere 5 TD passes and are tied for 7th in the league with 12 sacks. Both of Hasselbeck’s 2 interceptions were brought back for scores by members of the Texans secondary Sunday (63 yards for CB Kareem Jackson, 55 yards for FS Danieal Manning). He also threw 2 TDs to Titans in the 38-17 loss.
The Titans’ bigger problem is their defense. While Titans’ many dynamic offensive players may take issue with the play-calling and formations of their offense, the Titans defense seems to lack an effective scheme and also effective personnel. LB Colin McCarthy could be back this week, and would instantly upgrade a defense that has allowed 24 or more points in each of their four games. The Titans are tied for 26th with just 6 sacks, and have only forced two turnovers this year.
