Today, they signed free agent CB Aaron Berry, recently released by the Lions, to a 2-year deal. He must serve a 3-game suspension for assault charges, after being arrested for the second time during the summer. Berry has played in 12 career games and has 13 career passes defensed with one interception.
The next goal for the Jets must be to address wide receiver, whether or not Santonio Holmes has ligament damage (his x-ray was negative, but it looks as though he has ligament damage). It’s clear the Jets aren’t getting consistent quality quarterback play from Mark Sanchez, but adding free agent WR Terrell Owens would be a good last-ditch effort to reveal who the main culprit(s) is/are for Sunday’s putrid 8 first-down travesty. Stephen Hill is still out, and is still learning how to beat man coverage. Jeremy Kerley is a contributor, and Patrick Turner and Chaz Schilens don’t strike fear into the heart of defenses.
If nothing else, adding Owens, Plaxico Burress, and/or Mike Sims-Walker might save them from another performance on offense like Sunday (the Jets still have some great defenses left on the schedule, including the Cardinals, Seahawks, Chargers and the prolific Houston Texans in Monday night’s match-up). I don’t know if Tannenbaum and Rex Ryan would feel like bringing in another player who’ll likely miss time with suspension in Chad Johnson.
