The strange career of free agent RB Cedric Benson has an excellent chance to end on a high note. One night after James Starks turned the ball over in the first preseason game, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen is reporting Green Bay is in discussions to sign Benson, who turns 30 December 28th. Former Packer RB Ryan Grant is still a free agent, and he turns 30 December 2nd.
Cedric Benson overcame an angry fanbase, police mistreatment, losing a fumble in the Super Bowl and being abandoned by the team who drafted him to become a quality power and short-yardage back.
As with any other running back with his wear and tear, a reduced number of carries could increase his impact, as could a change of scenery, since Cedric complained last year of his role with the Bengals. Benson scored 20 TDs in 44 games for Cincinnati, despite receiving hand-offs from three different QB’s and working with a first-time offensive coordinator last season (albeit a great one in Jay Gruden).
This is an intriguing Green Bay backfield, one in which the backs have explosion and power (James Starks and Alex Green), and in which the most important responsibility for the running back is pass protection.
