The Philadelphia Eagles have signed street free agent WR Andrew Brewer and waived/injured WR Ron Johnson. Brewer played in the UFL with the Omaha Nighthawks (2010-11) under their GM Rick Mueller, now a player personnel executive with Philadelphia. Brewer received from former Eagles QB Jeff Garcia as a Nighthawk.
Eagles second-string QB Mike Kafka threw to him at Northwestern.
Ron Johnson had a dislocated ankle. However, I don’t know much about the injury, so it could be that someone could still pick him up later in the season. Eagles wideout Riley Cooper broke his collarbone during camp. The Eagles have excellent depth behind two explosive but not complete receivers in Jackson and Maclin. I’d actually trust Avant in the red zone over either of those two, and I expect him to have improved chemistry with Vick this year. Former Philadelphia Soul WR Tiger Jones has made great catches in camp. Former QB rookie Marvin McNutt has a good size and speed. Chad Hall is a skillful route runner.
For just overall number of guys who can play and the number of things you can do with them, this is one of the best wide receiver corps in the NFL. That said, – just like with the Seahawks – I don’t think their top 2 scare me that much if I were a defensive coach. I like the top 2 for the Redskins, Packers, Patriots, Ravens, Buccaneers, Bears, Cowboys and Steelers more.
