The Peyton Manning-led Broncos are the favorites in the AFC West and the Chargers are second per Cantor Gaming.
This played right into the theme Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith has been playfully sounding since Manning signed with the Broncos in March accoridng to Kevin Acee and Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune.
“I couldn’t care less about predictions,” Smith said Wednesday afternoon. “It’s fun to do, and it stimulates conversation … As far as the division race is concerned, I know this, it will be very difficult to win the West. The Broncos are defending champs, and they added Peyton Manning. The Raiders and the Chiefs are much better. The Broncos are led by one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history. I just hope the Broncos don’t run away with the division and leave the rest of us behind in the dust.”
“I hope it’s a tight, competitive race to the finish line for all of us,” Smith said. “That way, whoever comes out on top in the West will be primed for their playoff run. May the best team win, and I hope it’s us.”
“I don’t know yet about our team,” he said. “It’s still early. We are not finished building our 2012 team. I think I will have a better feel for that around mid-August. I do like what we are putting together so far, and I am excited about the challenge that lies ahead.”
