The Redskins have landed free agent safety Madieu Williams, choosing to come to DC over the Atlanta Falcons.
Williams was in DC to visit the Redskins last Friday, then went to Atlanta to talk to the Falcons. He had offers on the table from both team.
A 2004 second round pick out of the University of Maryland by the Cincinnati Bengals, Williams has 488 tackles, 4.5 quarterback sacks, and 12 interceptions in an 103-game career with the Bengals (2004-07), Minnesota Vikings (2008-10) and San Francisco 49ers, where played behind Pro Bowl free safety Dashon Goldson last season.
Williams recorded six tackles while playing in around 14 percent of the 49ers’ defensive snaps during the regular season, adding three tackles on special teams. Williams also forced a fumble on special teams in the post-season.
The Redskins released veteran free safety O.J. Atogwe after the season and lost starting strong safety LaRon Landry to the free agency. Williams will likely compete with Reed Doughty and DeJon Gomes for the starting free safety job this summer.
