The Jets last season got away from running the ball, and it cost them a spot in the playoffs. This season they are determined to get back to it, much to the liking of running back Shonn Greene.
“I’m looking forward to it a lot,” Greene said in NY at the Nike uniform launch Tuesday. “Seeing how Miami did things (under Sparano as head coach), running the ball a lot — obviously I’m a running back, that’s a good thing. Just looking for a brand new fresh start and some new things.”
Greene led the Jets in rushing last season with 1054 yards on 253 carries with six TD’s. He also caught 30 balls out of the backfield for 211 yards. The back is entering the final season of his rookie contract and is now the leader in the backfield.
“It’s going to (be different) for the simple fact that these past years I had somebody kind of there that was more experienced and knew the ropes, and now it’s looking like it’s just going to be me,” Greene said of playing without a veteran like LaDainian Tomlinson and Thomas Jones. “But we have faith in Joe McKnight and Bilal (Powell), so we look forward to showing our talents. Especially the young guys, Joe and Bilal. They’ve got a lot to show.”
Greene needs to have a big season for the Jets if they are going to make noise in the AFC. A good attitude about the new “ground and pound” offense is a good start for he and the Jets.
