The NFL Needs A 3-Point Contest

The NBA announced James Jones of the Miami Heat, Joe Johnson of the Atlanta Hawks, Kevin Love of the Minnesota Timberwolves, Ryan Anderson of the hometown Orlando Magic, Anthony Morrow of the New Jersey Nets, and Mario Chalmers of the Heat are going to compete in the 3-Point Contest this year.

The NFL needs something like this.

Maybe in addition to the Pro Bowl, the NFL can just admit that the masses love quarterbacks. Why not convince a few of them to participate in a game of H-O-R-S-E or an accuracy contest? They’ve done similar things to this with the QB Challenge, but many of those tasks weren’t passing-oriented, and the moving tires were always so low to the ground I thought.

Perhaps they can take a page from “Ninja Warrior” for a similar obstacle course for linebackers.

Two things that would make the passing contest rock are:

1. Prizes. I suspect that there is no prize big enough to really engage the highest-earning quarterbacks, but maybe some of those who make six to low-seven figures will be interested.

2. Humor. Maybe TV personalities like Jay Glazer and Shannon Sharpe have to stand on platforms above water and try to catch as many of their partners’ footballs as possible to gain the prize they would share. There are many personalities that people would love to see get dunked into various kinds of food and liquids: Skip Bayless, Jon Gruden, Joe Buck, and Troy Aikman.

Whatever the case, many don’t like the Pro Bowl. Instead of waiting for those players to start recklessly throwing their bodies around – risking their careers in an exhibition game -, I suggest they introduce a new event where no one gets hurt.

Hit “Like” if you want to see changes to Pro Bowl weekend.
