The 5 Biggest Stories Headed Into Wednesday’s Combine

1. The Fight For The #3 QB Taken. Last year, barely anyone expected Jake Locker to go ahead of Blaine Gabbert as the #2 quarterback off the board. Now, Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III have the top two spots locked down (in what order, though?). Texas A&M’s Ryan Tannehill – who’s injured -, Arizona’s Nick Foles and Oklahoma State’s Brandon Weeden look like the next QB’s on draft boards in team war rooms.

2. The two most mysterious defensive prospects – North Carolina DE Quinton Coples and Arizona State OLB Vontaze Burfict – can start to erase skepticism with good performances and interviews. Burfict is supposedly out of shape.

3. Will Manning or Moss have held their first interview yet? Peyton still needs to be cut.

4. Who will have the fastest 40 time? Mike Mayock believes it will be Florida RB Chris Rainey. While 40 times barely factor – if at all – into who drafts who, those who run under 4.4 and have the ball in their hands can be electrifying. Last year’s best time was the 4.28 run by Raiders CB Demarcus Van Dyke. Raiders WR Jacoby Ford has the best time in 2010 – 4.28 – and Raiders WR Darrius Heyward-Bey had the best time in 2009 with 4.30. 2008’s top performer was Chris Johnson, with a 4.24. Free agent WR Yamon Figurs torched with a 4.30, the top time in 2007.

5. Will other players be cut by then? The Raiders’ Stanford Routt has already been cut, and Michael Huff might be next.
