Gridiron Gab 2012 NFL Draft Scouting Profile: LSU DT Michael Brockers

In the last few weeks, as more and more mock drafts have hit the web and airwaves, I have been hearing the same names over and over with relation to the Panthers and their first pick I’m this years draft. The first name that keeps popping up is Michael Brockers.

Brockers is a defensive tackle from LSU, and anchored one of the best defensive lines I have seen in college football in quite some time.

At 6’5″ and around 300 lbs is and impressive specimen, who has thus far coupled that physical stature with impressive speed and quickness. All of this combined with sheer relentlessness make him one of the best inside rushers in this years draft. This move would make a great deal of sense for the Panthers.

They desperately need an inside presence to help get pressure on opposing .quarterback, as well as stopping the run. Someone from his agent even posted on twitter today that he had scheduled a visit with the team for March.

There two things about this pick that give me reason to pause. First, we don’t know the status of Ray Edwards the Panthers free agent DT who missed all of 2011 due to a training camp injury. If Edwards is healthy would it be smart to use the 8th or 9th pick on a players who may not need to play in 2012? There are so many other defensive needs, I just don’t know if that would be smart.

The other thing is that Brockers is coming out as a red-shirt. sophomore, and while he played both he 2010 and 2011 seasons, only 2011 was really impressive. I look forward to learning more about this intriguing prospect, and seeing what he can do at the NFL Combine next week.
