Jim Caldwell learned the hard way Tuesday that the NFL truly stands for “Not for Long” if you don’t win year after year. Two years ago this week, he was getting the Colts ready for a home AFC Title game against the Jets.
Two years later, he is cleaning out his office as the team slumped to a 2-14 record with star QB Peyton Manning. Now the team and new GM Ryan Grigson will be on the lookout for a new head coach, and below are the top five choices on the list, with an odds ranking next to each of being the new head man on the Colts sideline.
1. Marty Mornhinweg – Eagles Offensive Coordinator
The Eagles OC was a coach for the Lions for a couple seasons, but it was a disaster, as he won just five games, losing 27. He has been with the Eagles as the OC for the past 9 seasons, and also has experience with the 49ers as an assistant. Philadelphia was fifth in the league in scoring (25.1 points per game) and third in total yardage (372.7 per game) during his tenure. He will bring a fresh look to the offense and will have a huge impact on Andrew Luck early in his career.
Odds to Being the New Colts Coach – 4/1
2. Mike McCoy – Broncos offensive coordinator
The Dolphins have a second interview set up with McCoy, so if they want to get him, they are going to have to move fast. McCoy helped the Broncos offense turn around their season after a 1-4 start, and helped Tim Tebow and the team get to 8-8 and to the divisional round of the postseason. McCoy has been in charge of the Broncos offense since 2009, and it appears he is on the fast track to being a head coach in the NFL.
Odds to Being the New Colts Coach – 6/1
