Bills Fire DC George Edwards; Promote Former NFL Head Coach Dave Wannstedt

Bills defensive coordinator George Edwards has been relieved of his duties, head coach Chan Gailey announced on Monday.

Assistant head coach/inside linebackers coach Dave Wannstedt will replace Edwards.

Edwards was the Bills’ defensive coordinator the last two seasons, with the Bills ranking 24th and 26th in total defense. Against the run, the Bills ranked 32nd in 2010 and 28th in 2011 and slipped from 3rd against the pass to 19th in 2011. The Bills’ defense also ranked 31st inside the red zone and, as a result, were 30th in scoring defense this season.

Wannstedt brings a lot of experience to the coordinator position, handling those duties with the Dallas Cowboys (1989-91) and Miami Dolphins (1999) before head coaching opportunities with the Chicago Bears (1993-98) and Dolphins (2000-03). Wannstedt also served as the University of Miami’s defensive coordinator from 1986-88.
