In a refreshing new ESPN The Magazine “NEXT” interview with Cam Newton, Cam reveals more of his personality.
Yet, for a guy whose words have been unfairly way over-scrutinized, he will ignite controversy again with his reference to Vince Young, Jamarcus Russell, and the racial bias against him going into the draft.
Cam’s feelings about the racism: “But I can’t sit up here and look at it like, oh man, my critics are racist. I blame JaMarcus Russell and to some degree Vince Young. If you have the opportunity to make that kind of money doing something you love to do, why would you screw it up? I’m trying to be a trailblazer. If Baylor’s Robert Griffin decides to come out, I want people to say ‘He can be the next Cam Newton’ instead of ‘He’s gonna be the next JaMarcus Russell.'”
Looking at the quote out of context, it is definitely a slam. It also seems to exonerate any racist commentator or scout who might have compared him to Young or Russell because they’re black.
Reading the whole interview, it’s hard to bash Cam Newton. He’s young, he’s brash, he’s got a chip on his shoulder, he’s funny and – for those reasons – his teammates enjoy playing with him.
You’d like to think racism is gone from the NFL. Yet, it was a little odd to see a quarterback like Tyrod Taylor fall to the 5th round. It would be great to sit in on a meeting with scouts and personnel guys on a team that needed quarterbacking depth to see why they passed on Taylor.
