Giants Gab Contributor Big Daddy
If you ever watched the movie “Apocalypse Now” you’ll remember those famous words spoken by Colonel Kurtz, as played by Marlon Brando. The horror, the horror, to me that sums up the Giants performance this Sunday, it was a horror. Pathetic also comes to mind for a description. My last blog described this game as a must win game and I went into some details as to why I thought it was. During the long morning of pre-game shows on TV this was also described as a must win game by many of the so called experts of the NFL. They also picked the Giants to win, why did they pick the Giants? Because they know Tom Coughlin and believe he is a competent coach, they also know that the Giants have superior talent compared to the Redskins. So how did the Redskins win? They also forgot how good a coach Mike Shanahan is, that’s one reason.
The fact was that the Redskins were ready to play a football game and the Giants were not. Why weren’t the Giants ready to play, why haven’t they been ready to play for so many games this season? In fact over the last 8 years of Tom Coughlin’s regime there have been too many games the Giants players were not ready to play. Since the Super Bowl win every season it seems to get worse, not better.
Jerry Reese provides good players for this staff and all I see are injuries and late season collapses. Many fans are loyal to Coughlin and his staff, it’s understandable. Although at this point in time I think we have all had enough of this coaching staff’s failures. The team’s performance in this game has summed up the whole Coughlin tenure, another late season dive and losing to teams we should have beaten.
There were issues brought out before Coughlin officially became the head coach. Many people did not want him, honestly at the time he probably was the best choice. Now the Giants have options and should go in a different direction. Many of the reservations about Coughlin had merit and came to be. I won’t go into specifics, if you are a Giants fan you should remember them. Or do some of us have short memories? I just do not want to go down the list although I do remember them. All the players in the NFL are polled each season as to which head coach they least want to play for and TC was voted #1. He has won that distinction a few times if my memory serves me correctly. Although his peers feel he is competent, maybe competent is not enough to consistently win in the NFL, maybe you must be exceptional. My feelings are that competent will take you into the playoffs, exceptional will win a Super Bowl. A competent head coach with exceptional coordinators is a good recipe for success, it worked in the 2007-8 season, we had Spags.
This past 8 years has brought us one amazing moment in 2008 when we won a Super Bowl for the 2007 season. We beat a better team that day, we did it because in my opinion we had something this team has lacked since the end of the 2008 season. One was Spags, the other was Michael Strahan who retired after the Super Bowl. They both brought the team spirit and leadership that was not there before and we haven’t had since. The fact is that this team cannot get up emotionally, we do not have the type of coaching staff that can do that. They do not promote it from the veteran players in a positive way either, both Rolle and Jacobs come to mind. We have some veterans who talk too much but they do not lead. Some lead by example like Eli Manning which is a necessity. Even though they are professionals and grown men the players need more, they need leadership not talk.
Amazingly we are still not out of the playoff picture. We can still win the division or possibly a wild card berth. On the wild card berth I am not sure how that would work, it is a bit complex and we would have to wait until the end of the last game played for it to be figured out by the NFL. There are a lot of factors but one would have to be beating the Cowboys again. I just don’t see this team beating the Cowboys again, the Jets after watching them play against the Eagles is a possibility. We should know where we stand by next weekend to some degree. Honestly I don’t see us making the playoffs or winning a game in the playoffs if we do.
So let’s enjoy the past and move into the future of the New York Football Giants. Clean house and rebuild, we have a lot of young talent. Eli Manning who I believe to be a franchise quarterback is still young enough to wait a season or two with a new head coach to reach the Super Bowl again. Maybe a few more Super Bowls with a better coach and staff. Coughlin was a good coach, not a great one, there is no doubt Spags was a great defensive coordinator. Throughout Coughlin’s time here Spags was the only great coordinator, the rest were from terrible to mediocre on both offense and defense. If you look at the big picture I think the record proves that. I am tired of competent and mediocre, I want exceptional again. Maybe I’m spoiled because I was around to see Parcells coach, he was exceptional and so was his staff.
