The Saints have placed veteran tight end David Thomas on injured reserve, Mike Triplett of The Times-Picayune reports.
Thomas missed five games earlier this season with a concussion and appeared to sustain an additional concussion against the Atlanta Falcons before the bye week.
Signed to a three-year, $5.5 million contract in August, Thomas caught five passes for 16 yards this season. Thomas caught 65 passes for 575 yards and three touchdowns in his first two seasons with the Saints.
Replacing Thomas on the 53-man roster is rookie tight end Michael Higgins, who caught two passes for 35 yards in the preseason before spending the first 11 weeks of the season on the practice squad. The Saints also added tight end Daniel Hardy, a 2011 sixth-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, to the practice squad along with offensive tackle Phil Trautwein.
