Jon Gruden’s faith in Chris Simms and the rest of the quarterbacks may have led to the decision to take Cadillac Williams over Aaron Rodgers in the first round of the 2005 NFL Draft. Maybe he also felt like Rodgers was going to fall and that he might have a chance either trading up or staying at 37th to take him in the 2nd.
He undoubtedly liked Rodgers, and sprung a surprise on him while rolling out the red carpet when they worked him out: free agent Jerry Rice. “”Back in 2005, I think it was maybe April or late March, Jon came out with Paul Hackett and said he had a surprise for me after we kind of watched some film and talked some ball,” Rodgers said. “One of my childhood, favorite players, being a huge 49ers fan growing up, Jerry Rice comes walking down the steps and I get to throw passes to him.
