UPDATE: Williams is officially done, as he has been placed on Injured Reserve. Also, the team has signed defensive end Chauncey Davis to a two-year deal, while waiving Nick Reed.
Bears left guard Chris Williams underwent emergency wrist surgery after exiting Sunday’s 37-13 victory over the Lions, coach Lovie Smith said.
The injury could be similar to the one linebacker Brian Urlacher suffered in the first game of the 2009 season against Green Bay. Urlacher was placed on injured reserve after undergoing emergency surgery the same night.
Asked about the likelihood of losing Williams for the rest of the season, center Roberto Garza said, “It’s definitely going to be a big factor. But Edwin (Williams) did a heck of a job stepping in and filling that role.
It’s unclear how Williams suffered the injury, yet, it’s certainly clear that it’s an injury that will affect the Bears offense moving forward.
