Giants fall to 49?ers; Manning can’t lead another comeback

The Giants came into San Francisco with one main goal on defense: Stop the run. They did it, but it wasn’t enough.  The Giants and 49′ers combined for 5 field-goals the first half, neither side gaining much of an advantage on one another. Manning hit WR Mario Maninngham for a beautiful fade in the end-zone giving the Giants a 13-12 lead. However, 49′ers QB Alex Smith had other plans then to allow the Giants to steal a win in his home stadium. Smith hit TE Vernon Davis who marched into the end-zone with ease after blown coverage. The Niners tacked on another seven after RB Kendall Hunter scored giving the Niners a two score lead in the fourth quarter.

Could Manning lead another comeback? Manning marched the Giants right down the field and threw another beautiful ball to WR Hakeem Nicks for his second touchdown pass of the game, putting the Giants down seven. The defense held the 49′ers, forcing them to punt. Manning was able to hit WR Mario Maninngham for a ten yard strike on fourth down giving the Giants life. Later on in the drive Manning hit Cruz putting the Giants in 49′ers territory.  With the ball on the Niners ten and third and two, the Giants decided to run a draw to RB Danny Ware. As predicted by many, including the Niners, and many Gabbers, the Niners stuffed it. On fourth and two, Manning tried to hit Cruz but the ball was batted down at the line, sealing the 49′ers win. The 49′ers are now 8-1 while the Giants drop to 6-3 and an all important showdown before Thanksgiving home against the Eagles.

The loss kills, as the Giants were close to pulling another major comeback. But it was an impressive game by the Giants. They held all-pro RB Frank Gore to zero yards. Not the end of the world. The Giants still hold a 1 game lead in the division over the Cowboys. The Giants will play the ‘Boys’ twice in the next eight games. At the end of the day, if the Giants take of those two games, they likely win the divsion. This game hurts for seeding wise. It’s almost a lock, assuming the divsion the 49′ers play keeps stinking, that they’ll get a bye. Had the Giants beaten them, they would have held the tie-breaker.
