Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald is reporting that the chief reason for the team leaving star cornerback Vontae Davis in Miami this week was because he showed up to practice late and smelled of alcohol.
Davis also got into a confrontation with star receiver Brandon Marshall during the same practice, and although it is not known whether this was the definite reason for the scuffle, it is looking like the antagonizer of the argument.
The Dolphins cited before the game that the reason Davis was left behind was for not acting like a “pro”. At the time I interpreted this as a referral to Davis repeatedly going to a massage therapist for treatment on his injured hamstring, something the Dolphins frowned upon. This may have been a factor, but if the alcohol rumors are indeed true, there would be no doubt that the Fins did the right thing in this situation.
It is unknown whether this is a recurring problem, and while no punches were thrown between either Marshall or Davis, Salguero ponders whether either would be reported to the league office.
