Lions DE Cliff Avril named NFC Defensive Player of the Week

Lions sack artist Cliff Avril has been rewarded the NFC’s Defensive Player of the Week award, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Avril had three tackles, two sacks (five on the season), two forced fumbles and a 24-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown during the Lions’ 45-10 rout in Denver on Sunday.

A 2008 third-round pick out of Purdue, Avril has 114 tackles, 24 quarterback sacks and 11 forced fumbles in his 49-game career.

Avril is playing the 2011 season under a one-year, “first-round” restricted free agent tender. Barring an extension, Avril will be a 25-year-old unrestricted free agent next offseason.
