The Bears have released safety Chris Harris, Vaughn McClure of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Recently benched upon his return from a hamstring injury, Harris had requested a trade. When one was not made, Harris was inactive for the team’s Week 6 win over the Vikings before injuries put him back in the starting lineup for Sunday’s win over the Buccaneers in London.
Harris had three tackles and a pass defensed in the 24-18 victory over the Bucs.
A 2005 sixth-round pick out of Louisiana-Monroe by the Bears, Harris was traded to the Panthers in 2007.
Harris was dealt back to the Bears in April of 2010, Harris started 16 games and had a career-high five interceptions.
The veteran safety confirmed the news via a tweet: “I was just released this morning by the Bears. Thank u for the opp to play football n do what I luv. I’m looking toward my next venture”
Harris told the Tribune he did not ask to be released.
