Thoughts And Musings: Special Bye Week Edition

I’m pretty miserable during bye weeks. For one, there’s no game to talk about. For another, it means there’s less content for the site. What am I going to write about, Antrel Rolle’s bye week vacation? No, I couldn’t care less about that. So, during this special edition of T and M, we’ll go around the NFL, talk some general football, talk about life, and have some fun.

-The big news is the Carson Palmer to the Raiders. I think it’s an interesting deal. Carson Palmer has not been the same since he had that horrific knee injury in the playoffs. Before that, he was well on his way to becoming an elite QB. Now, I’m not sure. He needs to acclimate himself to the Raiders really fast. He needs to get timing with his receivers. And he needs to play. He hasn’t played in a while. And he isn’t getting eased in like the preseason. He’s being thrown into a playoff race. Hey, it if pays off, it’s a great trade. This is a decent football team. Darren McFadden is awesome. I think they have young, fast receivers. I think they have a great D line. If they add an elite QB, look out. But is Palmer an elite QB? I don’t think so. I think he’s an improvement over Jason Campbell. He’s obviously an improvement over Kyle Boller, who would have started with Campbell out. I don’t think he’s great, though. So you give up a first round pick for him, potentially 2. It’s a risk, a big one. But, if you’re a Raiders fan, you love the move, because they’re going all in. I think time will tell how it plays out on the field. But, I think it was the right move.

-I think if you told me that Cam Newton was going to be like this, I would have called you a fool. I think his transformation, his rapid transformation, into a pocket passer first, is incredible. Yes, he has the legs, and you’ve seen them run the option. But, he’s not bailing out the pocket at the first sign of trouble, which I thought he would. Obviously, you can see the cannon he has. But the accuracy, the touch, it’s very impressive. There’s obviously going to be rough patches, but I’m liking what I see.

-I think Denver needs to admit it’s in a rebuild mode, get an actual QB and get an actual run game. I think Tebow is not an NFL QB, because, unlike Newton, he doesn’t have the same arm strength. I think Knownshon Moreno is not good, and Willis McGahee is not a starting caliber back. I think they need a receiver, a gamebreaker. I think their defense has potential. But, Tebow doesn’t signal a new, great day for a franchise. He signals a step back.

-I think Detroit’s front four can propel them to deep in the playoffs if, and I really mean if, they can improve the run game. Yes, we’ve seen flashes from Jahvid Best, but he’s not your typical runner. I think that their draft pick Mikel LeShoure would have been a good fit, but he’s out for the year. I don’t think the Lions can make a run this year. I think next year, watch out. Because that front four is scary good.

-I think the Niners success isn’t about Alex Smith, it’s about the front 7. I think Aldon Smith was a great pick. Patrick Willis is a stud. NaVarro Bowman is becoming a top notch player. Justin Smith is having a very good year. I’m not willing to say that Alex Smith is destined for greatness. I think it’s about the defense, about the culture, not about the QB play.

-I wouldn’t be surprised if Green Bay goes undefeated. My oh my, is that team good. Aaron Rodgers is playing on a different planet right now. The game is easy for him. Their defense is terrific. But, if you didn’t think that Rodgers was the best QB in football, you should now. There’s no real way to stop Rodgers. Greg Jennings, Jermichael Finely, just outstanding.

-I think I could be a better offensive lineman than some of the guys on the Bears. If they could protect Cutler for at least a little bit, this would be a very good team.

-Hipster glasses interlude: Can someone tell me the whole idea behind those large hipster glasses? Cause I don’t get it. What’s the idea about wearing glasses that are bigger than your face? Is there some sort of message behind it? I’ve been wearing glasses almost half my life, and I don’t want people looking at my glasses, I want people looking at me. Look, if someone could explain it, I wouldn’t be opposed to it, because I generally don’t care what people wear. But, to me, it’s just ridiculous.

-I think the Suck For Luck campaigns are dangerous. Everyone says Luck is the best QB prospect in a long time, and that might be true, but 1) you don’t want to put all your eggs in one basket. He could end up being a great QB, but if he goes to Miami, and there’s nothing around him, or if he goes to Denver, and there’s nothing around him, he isn’t going to be in a position to succeed right away. Let’s not anoint him, at least not yet.

-I so enjoy watching Calvin Johnson play. He’s the closest to Randy Moss in his prime.

-I take pleasure in watching Ndamukong Suh play. Yes, I’m starting to develop a little fan crush on the Lions, if that wasn’t already clear.

-I think that the Giants were smart to finally not use Prevent in the Bills game. They trusted their corners to play man and it worked. Build off that.

-I think the Cowboys are sneaky good, if Romo plays more consistent. I like their D. I like Romo when he’s on. He’s just so up and down, hard to predict.

-Let’s not count out the Eagles, not yet at least.

-I feel very bad for Adrian Peterson. Because teams are just going to start ganging up on him, forcing Ponder to beat them. And the Vikes don’t have the weapons to do that just yet.

-In a perfect world, I would eat sushi every day. I don’t know if it’s a full blown addiction, but it’s pretty close. I have to go to Japan. Anyone been?

-Notice how the wildcat is kind of slipping into oblivion? I mean you see it, but not nearly as much as you did when it first was popular. It’s kind of a one trick pony. Once defenses figured it out, there wasn’t much you could change about it. As a change up play, it’s nice, but not as a constant thing like the Dolphins did.

-I hope Ramses Barden can come back soon, but I’m not expecting much. He just hasn’t proven he can be an NFL wideout. We fell in love with his size, and maybe rightfully so, but he’s not fast enough, doesn’t create separation, and doesn’t hold onto the ball. Recipe for disaster.

-I wonder, if the Colts get the first pick, if they go Luck. Obviously, he’s the consensus number one. But Peyton is going to come back. You’re not going to unseat Peyton for Luck. How many years does Peyton have left? 2? 3? Does Luck wait? Does Luck pull an Eli? I bet you Luck doesn’t want to a) follow Manning and b) wait behind him. I’m sure he wants to play right away.

-Looking forward to going to the Giants Packers game with my friend who’s a Pack fan. Believe me, trash talk has already started and we have some time before the game.

-Why do I feel that disguising coverages gets the defense in trouble more than the offense? Obviously, the offense has to follow it, but the defense has to execute it. I just think it’s harder. If you play your defense correctly, it’s going to work.

-I hope Brandon Lloyd helps Sam Bradford, because I think Bradford has all the tools to be a great QB. He just has nothing around him.
