The 1973 Rams lead by legendary head coach Chuck Knox and 6-time Pro Bowler & 1-time First-Team All-Pro QB John Hadl was one of the best teams is Rams history. Their offense was ranked 1st in the NFL and their defense a nearby 4th. The greatness of this season is often over looked due to a first round playoff loss to the Dallas Cowboys.
The 1973 Rams won their opening 6 game before losing 2 back-to-back heart breakers. The first was a 9-10 loss to the Vikings and then a 13-15 loss to the Falcons. Next the Rams closed out the season exactly as it started; with 6 straight victories. In the last six games the Rams won each by nearly an average 20 points per game.
The stars of that team were as mentioned QB John Hadl (a longtime Chargers QB with this being his only season with the Rams), WR Harold Jackson, and RB Lawrence McCutcheon. All 3 were selected 1st Team All Pro that year. Full Back Jim Bertelsen was also a Pro Bowl selection as was defensive players Isaiah Robertson and Jack Youngblood.
Just 1 year before the Rams were a losing team. New Rams head coach Knox turned things around in a short amount of time. I’m not sure if coach Spagnuolo needs to be replaced, but it is always reassuring to know that change can come quickly. Go Rams!
