The Dallas Cowboys are 2-3 straight up and 2-2-1 against the sports betting odds this season. Dallas is doing just enough to get their fans and bettors excited but far too often they can’t come through in the clutch. Last week they went toe to toe with the New England Patriots but couldn’t make the plays down the stretch to win. And that has been the story for Dallas this season. They do just enough to lose close games.
Garrett the Problem
In recent weeks the media has been blaming quarterback Tony Romo for the woes of the Dallas Cowboys but last week there is no question that head coach Jason Garrett was the guilty one. Garrett showed no confidence in Romo in the fourth quarter and ran three straight running plays before punting to the Patriots. Tom Brady then led the Patriots down the field for the game winning touchdown. The conservative play calling of Garrett did not go over well with owner Jerry Jones. “When you get in a situation like that, you’ve got to go for the kill,” Jones said, “I felt like we could’ve been more aggressive. Our defense had been good all day, but you knew Brady had a length-of-the-field drive in him – so it didn’t surprise me at all when he took them down at the end.”
Tony Romo threw for 317 yards and a touchdown for the Cowboys and it was clear he was not the problem. The poor play calling in the fourth quarter was not the only issue that people within the Dallas organization had with Garrett. He simply would not open up the offense and let his big play receivers, Dez Bryant and Miles Austin make plays. Romo was throwing short passes all day long.
Don’t Give up on Dallas Yet
The Cowboys have proven they have some talent on both sides of the ball. They are playing in a division, the NFC East that looks very winnable. Dallasis just 1.5 games behind the New York Giants for the division lead. The Cowboys are 7th in yards per game and 5th best in fewest yards allowed. Any team in the Top 10 in both offense and defense deserve respect in sports betting odds. The schedule really isn’t too difficult for Dallas the rest of the season. They are big favorites in sports betting this week as they host St. Louis and then they go to Philadelphia before winnable home games against Seattle and Buffalo. Games against Washington, Miami, Arizona, the Giants twice, Tampa Bay and Philadelphia are definitely games Dallas should be competitive in with a chance to win.
