Here we are, one day away from the NFL trading deadline and the Broncos leading wide receiver Brandon Lloyd is on the trading block. I usually do not acknowledge these rumors as they come from nowhere and national media types like to throw in the Rams name any time a receiver is around. However, this is not a drill and the Rams are heavily involved by all accounts. Let’s take a look how we got here and what happens next.
October 13th – The Denver Post reports that Brandon Lloyd is on the trading block and the asking price is in the 3rd to 5th round variety. ”Three or four” teams are interested. The Rams are not expressly named.
October 13th – The Titans and Panthers, two teams named in the original report deny interest in Lloyd.
October 14th – The Cardinals and Jaguars deny interest in trading for Lloyd.
October 14th – Michael Lombardi of the NFL Network says that there is a 90% chance that Brandon Lloyd gets traded and suggested the Rams would be a good landing spot. He doesn’t mention that the Rams are interested, just they would be a logical landing spot – again with the WR and Rams lazy linkage. So far, nothing to see here, please move along.
October 15th – Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk says “There is talk in league circles that the Rams could mak a play for Brandon Lloyd”. That is getting a bit warmer, it is not just lazy linkage, but instead real talk out there about Lloyd and the Rams.
October 16th – Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, who has solid gold sources reported that the Patriots, Rams are 49ers were the teams most interested in Brandon Lloyd. Now things are getting interesting and all week need is a confirmation from…
October 16th – Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch confirms that the Rams have interest in Lloyd and have “The Rams have had several conversations with Denver about the possibility of trading for Broncos wide receiver Brandon Lloyd”.
Ok, now we are at Defcon 1 as far as Rams and trade rumors go. The Rams have had discussions and there is a 90% chance Lloyd gets traded before Tuesday’s deadline. However, the Broncos want to trade Lloyd by their practice today. So, we may hear this afternoon, which team will win the Brandon Lloyd Sweepstakes. Let’s take a quick look at the other teams involved with information from today:
San Francisco 49ers – The 49ers “appear” to have the strongest interest in Lloyd. However, Peter King reported that the Rams would give the Broncos a higher pick than the 49ers. And isn’t what this is all about?
New England Patriots – Head Coach Bill Belichick says he “likes Lloyd as a player”, which details the interest they have as well.
One last wrinkle in time here, Peter King is also reporting that Brandon Lloyd would return a 5th round pick in free agent compensation if he leaves the team in free agency, so the risk to give a 4th or 5th round pick to the Broncos would be very slim. And Jim Thomas has reported that the Rams will not be sending a 3rd rounder to Denver.
This morning, everyone is on the same page. The Rams look to be willing to give the most up for Brandon Lloyd, so that makes them the front runners. No one is going to go above a 4th or 5th round pick, which is within the range of what the Broncos will accept. For once, smoke meets fire, meets a raging inferno of trade rumors swirling around Brandon Lloyd. Stay tuned to see how it turns out this afternoon.
