The winless Dolphins entered the bye week knowing it’s only a matter of time before their coach Tony Sparano gets fired.
Dan Pompei of the National Football Post writes that if Sparano is canned, the job is ESPN Monday Night Football analyst Jon Gruden’s “if he wants it“.
“People close to the situation believe the Dolphins job will be Jon Gruden’s if he wants it,” Pompei writes. “Gruden remains undecided on whether or not he will remain in broadcasting. It’s likely (Dolphins owner) Stephen Ross will offer Gruden a sweatheart deal that will make it difficult for Gruden to turn down.
“Rumors continue that the Dolphins also will hire Carl Peterson as team president.”
Another name to ponder on is current CBS studio analyst Bill Cowher, but that may only occur if the longtime head coach of the Steelers is given complete control of the football operations of the franchise.
Both Gruden (Buccaneers; SB XXXVII) and Cowher (Steelers; SB XL) have one Super Bowl ring to their resume.
