The NFL fined Packers linebacker Erik Walden $15,000 for his hit on Bears quarterback Jay Cutler last week that drew a 15-yard penalty for roughing the passer according to Pete Dougherty of the Green Bay Press-Gazette.
Walden disputes that the play should have been penalized or fined. It came on a hit just after Cutler had released a throw that cornerback Tramon Williams intercepted. Walden’s shoulder hit what appeared to be Cutler’s shoulder while linebacker Clay Matthews was tackling the quarterback.
“I didn’t lead with my head, I didn’t lunge,” Walden said. “Clay was at the bottom, so I tilted to give (Cutler) a little hit with my shoulder. I was jumping over him but I didn’t land on him or send him to the ground, and I didn’t lead with my head. And I didn’t launch myself into him, so I don’t know.”
