A week after holding down the Bengals for a win late at home, the Broncos were treated to the same fate on Sunday, as the Titans did enough late to stop Denver and take home a 17-14 win in Tennessee to move to 2-1.
Matt Hasselbeck won the game for the Titans with a 4-yard touchdown pass to former Broncos TE Daniel Graham with 4:24 left. The Titans lost leading WR Kenny Britt when his right knee buckled underneath him in the second quarter, but that didn’t stop Hasselbeck from finding other targets.
The catch for Graham was his first of the season. Hasselbeck beat on the Broncos for 311 yards and two touchdowns.
The Titans went 95 yards on seven plays in the game-winning drive. Craig Steven had a 58-yard catch and run while Nate Washington caught a 13-yard pass to get the Titans inside the five. Daniel Graham hauled in a four-yard pass for the go-ahead score.
Chris Johnson was held in check once again in the running game. He had just 21 yards on 13 carries, but he did gain 54 yards on four receptions for Tennessee.
Denver drove to the Titans 38 before Will Witherspoon sacked Orton, and two plays later, Jason Jones tipped Orton’s pass into the air that Witherspoon picked off with 1:39 to seal the victory and send Denver to 1-2.
The momentum of the contest changed when Denver failed to convert a fourth-and-goal from the one when the Broncos held a 14-10 advantage early on in the fourth quarter. Orton threw for 173 yards with two touchdowns and two crucial interceptions on 24-of-39 passing.
The Tennessee defense bottled up Willis McGahee all game long as he managed just 52 yards on 22 rushes. Eric Decker led all Bronco receivers with 48 yards on seven receptions.
