Eagles-Falcons rewind: “Dream Team” needs to step up run defense

It’s been about 72 hours now since I was chomping at the bit to watch the Eagles vs. Falcons on Sunday Night Football. I was armed with a six-pack and a bowl of chips. As I sat there ready to watch my team go into Atlanta and put down the Dirty Birds, I reflected on how bad my picks were earlier in the day. I made some AWEFUL picks in my last article. I really showed how big of an idiot I was in picking the Jags upsetting the Jets at home. Before I make my picks for this coming week, I will stay out of the way of any fumes that can cloud my thinking.

Watching Sunday night’s game unfold, the one thing that kept coming to mind was how awful the Eagles defend the run. It has now been two weeks in a row that the defense has given up a big run. Coach Reid’s “Dream” is turning into a nightmare week after week. During the offseason Philadelphia stacked up on defensive backs to help defend the multiple receiver formations they will face in this passing era in the NFL. The bright spot Sunday night was the defensive line of the Eagles beating the stuffing out of Matt Ryan. However, Ryan’s nickname is “Matty Ice”, and there is a reason he has been dubbed this nickname. He showed poise by brushing himself off and getting back at it. Guess what, the kid is from Philly. Go figure! Ryan ended up prevailing and beating his favorite childhood team.

As for the offense, Mike Kafka showed that he deserves to be the number 2 quarterback on the depth chart. He was solid after he had to fill in for an injured Mike Vick. Kafka is comfortable with the plays the coaches call for this high powered offense. According to Head Coach Andy Reid, Vick will be a game time decision for Sunday versus the Giants. He still has a battery of post concussion tests to take. The way the league is now he probably will not see the field on Sunday. Let’s just hope for sanity sake that Birds go 2-2 in our first 4 games. There is still a lot of growing this team needs to do. Originally I was under the impression it was mostly our defense that needed to gel. I am starting to think both sides of the ball need some time to come together. For all intensive purposes DeSean Jackson has been non-existent with only 8 catches in 2 games. By non-existent, I mean he only has 1 reception for over 40 yards. They need to tap that well a bit more. If they start attempting to stretch the field more then everything underneath will be a lot easier for our QB’s.

This team is offensively built to be a home run team. They need to keep swinging for the fences. Maybe they should bring in Ryan Howard for a pep talk. Or even better Joe Paterno, for you Penn State fans that are familiar with Penn State’s pep rallies. Nothing gets you pumped up like a 85-year old man jumping up and down, calling for his team to knock Alabama on their heads!

In closing, it is still early in the NFL season. A lot of teams are just getting into the swing of things. The league did suffer a lockout for a few months. The games have not been as messy as I thought they would be. However, the Eagles in particular, are not the high powered offensive that I remember from last season. Maybe, I should make that 6-pack a 12-pack this weekend because it is in fact the Giants that are coming to town.
