Confirmed: Peyton Manning Had Neck Surgery Thursday (today)

This is a Seahawks blog, but because Peyton Manning is my favorite quarterback and one of my favorite players, and someone on the main site already wrote about it, he’s getting a post here.

It has been confirmed that Manning had an additional neck procedures (cervical) done and that although it has been repeatedly stated there is no timeline, the timeline appears to be at least two months, or half of the regular season.

This is a huge blow to the NFL in general, most people you ask wouldn’t exclude Manning from their “best 2-3 quarterbacks in the NFL” list regardless of allegiance. Hell I despise Tom Brady but I can admit he’s a damn good quarterback.

Manning is the only truly indispensable player in the NFL; he is the Indianapolis Colts offense, period, without him it is impossible for that offense to be run the same, he knows it better than his coaching staff. In fact, he’s the only one in that building who has it mastered and is probably the only one who could truly teach it to the new additions on the team.

This is why you don’t draft fantasy teams the first week you’re able to– I selected Manning and in the fourth round I thought I got a steal, this was well before all of these rumors started popping up.

Luckily I snatched up Kyle Orton, who won me many leagues last year, and I have full confidence in him, who cares if they are going to a run based attack? He’s still going to chuck the pigskin a fair amount and he has last years No. 1 fantasy receiver in his arsenel.

As far as the Colts go, I think they’re screwed until Manning gets back, My starting quarterback at Washington State, stud and future NFL’er Jeff Tuel (draft him Pete Carroll!) is out half of the season and I am taking the same mentality with us (if they weren’t screwed already). UNLV and San Diego State were looking like locks for victories but I am not so sure an improbable 3-0 and possible national ranking (the latter are D1 and we are in the Pac-12…), is a lock anymore. It’s not like the national ranking would stick when Stanford (and the future Seahawks quarterback?) Oregon, USC, and Utah come in and steam roll us. But ask any Cougar and they’ll tell you they’ll take a week of being No. 24 with Paul Wulff at the helm (for the last year hopefully). If there is a caveat to the Tuel injury, it’s that it may add an additional year of eligibility and it could lead to an even worse year than expected and that would definitely lead to the firing of Paul Wulff.

Anyway, enough about my Cougars.. It is more relevant than the Colts on a Seahawks blog though no?

The Kerry Collins signing may be enough to keep the Colts offense on life support, but I would be shocked to see them at the halfway point with a better record than a 3-5 or 4-4 with Manning gone. If that is indeed how it plays out, they would have to be nearly perfect upon his return to have a shot at the playoffs.

Why didn’t the Seahawks sign Kerry Collins? I can guarantee if you ask most 12th Men (and women) they would take him over Tarvaris Jackson.

Look out for the Texans in the AFC South, and somewhere, Matt Hasselbeck has a nice wide smile on his face too, a lot of people (I can’t say all or it wouldn’t be called assault, armed robbery, murder, etc.) don’t wish harm on people, but you have to imagine members of the Titans, Jaguars, and Texans and their fan-bases (and any other team with the Colts on their schedule) are thrilled that Manning is not in the lineup for the foreseeable future.
