Longtime Detroit Lions beat writer Tom “Killer” Kowalski passed away this morning at the age of 51. “Uncle Killer” as he was known to his fans on the MLive.com message boards, was one of the most respected writers in the business and amongst readers. Kowalski not only covered the Lions since 1982, but he was also one of the 44 Pro Football Hall of Fame voters.
Kowalski embraced his role covering a team with a passionate fan base, troubled by mediocre and terrible performances. His “Lunch with Killer” chats, frequent mailbag sessions and constant tweets created a strong bond with his readers as well as his honest and fair coverage of the hometown team. Kowalski’s dry sense of humor and sarcasm eased the pain of so many bad moments for fans.
