The Good: The new look Eagles took flight on Thursday, not doing a lot of scoring, but holding the Ravens in check with a 7-point win. Michael Vick threw for 74 yards and a touchdown pass in his only series, and a couple new players – Nnamdi Asomugha and Vince Young both played and seemed to be at ease with their new team. Asomugha played two series while Young went 3 of 5 for 45 yards. Mike Kafka, who will likely be the #3 QB, went 13-for-19 for 132 yards. The offense held the ball for 35:46 to just 24:14 for the Ravens. Overall, a decent debut for the Eagles.
The Bad: Kafka got lucky on a call that ended up not being a fumble that would have been returned by the Ravens for a 93-yard score, but overall he and the team needs to be careful with the ball. The Eagles put up just 88 yards on 32 carries for an average of 2.8 yards per carry. This is going to be a team that relies more on throwing, but a run game is only going to help. New RB Ronnie Brown had just 22 yards on 9 carries. The Eagles also had 8 penalties for 81 yards, but that’s normal for a first preseason game.
Next: Another week of practice as the team gets ready for preseason game number two, a prime-time showdown on Thursday night with the defending AFC Champion Steelers at Heinz Field.
