I know that we are only five days in to the Panthers 2011 training camp, and one of those was a “moving” day. But, on the CBA mandated day of rest, and with such palpable excitement and energy coming from Spartanburg. I thought it would be nice to take a breath and reflect on what we’ve seen so far, and what we’ve been surprised by.
Armanti Edwards – As Curtis Rauen wrote earlier here on Panthers Gab, Armanti Edwards may be the biggest surprise right out of the gate. This could be because everyone is so focused on the Cam Newton show that the rest of the roster doesn’t get much airtime. More likely though, it’s because most people had written the young player off after last years debacle. It seems though that being out of the spotlight has been just what the doctor ordered. It is obvious that in this off-season Armanti remained focused and put in the work to transform himself into a viable 3rd receiver and punt returner in this league.
Kendric Burney – Formerly a UNC Tarheel, the Rookie cornerback Burney has by all accounts been having quite a camp. There have been several impressive interceptions in his short time in camp, and what seems like overall excellent play.
Greg Olsen – Everybody this guy can play. But I still count this as a surprise because until the signing was almost complete no one saw it coming. He can’t practice till Thursday, thanks to the CBA process, but there are already reports of him working hard and catching pass after pass from the jugs machine. By all accounts the man has great hands. The combination of Shockey and Olsen should be just the weapon whoever starts at QB needs.
Perhaps the biggest surprise of training camp so far though is the positive vibe that the players, coaches and even the fans have. It truly is beginning to feel like there could be something special, or maybe that’s just one fans wishful thinking.
