Redskins CB Phillip Buchanon has been suspended for the first four games of the 2011 regular season, head coach Mike Shanahan said on Tuesday.
Which league policy Buchanon violated was not disclosed, but the Redskins were aware of the suspension before re-signing him this week.
A 2002 first-round pick out of Miami by the Oakland Raiders, Buchanon has 388 tackles, one quarterback sack, and 20 interceptions in a nine-year career that has also included stints with the Houston Texans (2005-06), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2006-08), and Detroit Lions (2009).
Buchanon started five of 16 games for the Redskins last season, totaling 49 tackles, two interceptions, and a team-high 18 passes defensed.
