Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com reports that the end of the labor lockout means that quarterback Alex Smith’s re-signing with the 49ers is “pretty well set in stone.” Smith said Monday that he plans to sign as soon as possible, most likely early Saturday. and will spend his 7th year in the league with the ‘Niners.
“I’m not going to wait for anything,” he said. “I’m excited for this to start … waiting for that opportunity. “I’m sure it’ll be pretty quick. I’m sure it’ll move fast. It’s pretty well set in stone, I think.” When asked if his expected one-year deal will have an option for a second season, Smith answered, “I’m not going to get into that stuff until it’s officially signed.”
Smith emerged as a 49ers leader this offseason, organizing get-togethers for offensive players to learn the new West Coast system playbook that coach Jim Harbaugh is bringing back to the 49ers. He will enter training camp as Harbaugh’s starting quarterback.
