Why the Rams Should Say No to Reggie Bush

Highlight producing and socialite-dating running back Reggie Bush is seemingly on the way out of New Orleans after they drafted Mark Ingram in the first round and took a look at the salary that Bush is taking home every week. Bush is not a free agent yet, but with his exorbitant salary, he is an easy candidate to be cut when the league resumes action in a few weeks. The Rams should absolutely pass on Reggie Bush.

Bush will be looking for a larger salary that the typical back up running back, one that is commiserate with his status as an NFL “star”. Bush is not much of a runner between the tackles and usually excels mostly in the passing game. However, the Rams should not be interested in taking catches away from their own star running back Steven Jackson, who is even better than Bush between the tackles. Jackson is at his best when he is in the open against smaller players who he can run over and away from. Bush has exactly that same skill set.

I would rather have undrafted free agents Noel Devine or Brandon Saine if they want a smaller and speedier running back option for a much cheaper price. The Rams could pick up Devine, Saine and other much needed depth for the same price that Bush would command. Not to mention Bush’s huge profile might cause problems with the Rams low-profile squad. But, it would be huge for Rams’ jersey sales!

Bush is a good player and exactly the type of weapon that an offensive coordinator like Josh McDaniels goes to sleep at night dreaming about. However, the Rams already have a great running back able to dominate in the passing game. (Remember the great sideline catch by SJax at Seattle? That was single-handedly our best offensive play of the game.) A great way to reduce the wear and tear on Jackson would be to utilize him more in the passing game rather than slamming him between the tackles over and over again.

Additionally, at this point in his career, Bush is more of a wide receiver than running back and the Rams have picked up several new pass catchers through the draft. The Rams would be better off pic
