New Panthers QB Cam Newton spent some time Friday trying to lobby for wide out Steve Smith to stay as a member of the Panthers. Newton told a child at Smith’s camp Friday that he wanted to play for the Panthers because it had the top pick “and I wanted to have someone great to throw to.”
Smith spoke to the media, and said that he for awhile thought about retiring this offseason as his wife dealt with health issues. Now that tests have shown she doesn’t have lupus, Smith says he’s looking forward to proving he still can be an elite receiver for some team, possibly the Panthers.
The usual mouthy Smith sidestepped questions Friday on whether he wants to return to Carolina. Rumors had Smith wanting to play in either Baltimore or possibly San Diego.
Newton hopes his pitch to keep Smith in Carolina works – “hopefully, he got the message.”
