Well, my mock was greatly improved from an accuracy standpoint compared to last year, but I still only hit on a handful of picks. Trades combined with unforeseen events (i.e. Ponder at #12) sure know how to make all those predictions go right out the window.
So, I am going to go ahead and make some more predictions. Actually, “speculation” and “opinion” are probably better words.
The Vikings are slated to pick 11th tomorrow, so I wanted to do the honors of presenting you with my “Top 11” players that still remain. Keep in mind, this board is Vikings-specific, so certain positions are of a lesser value (like running back) than others.
Here you go:
- Da’Quan Bowers, DE, Clemson: Apparently teams didn’t like what they saw on the medical reports for the guy once thought of as a lock for the top five. Injury risks are easier to swallow, however, in the second round and his upside is too great to ignore.
- Ryan Mallett, QB, Arkansas: I know, I know, this would be shocking considering the Vikes took Ponder in the first. Still, I think Mallett is a great talent and could provide excellent insurance to the whole Ponder-is-the-future theory. Those character concerns were apparently not taken lightly by teams, however.
- Stefen Wisniewski, G/C, Penn State: With Ponder’s injury history, and the relative lack of fan support for picking him, the Vikings could really use an immediate-impact type of player. Wisniewski could be that guy that steps in and is an instant upgrade along the line.
- Benjamin Ijalana, OT, Villanova: I think everyone would agree that the Vikings could use some serious competition for both of their starting tackles and at the right guard position. Ijalana would provide just that.
