Jaguars Won’t Put an Emphasis on Quarterbacks in the Draft

The word around the NFL is that the Jaguars need to use their 16th pick of the draft on a quarterback. I’ll concede that the Jaguars need to get a quarterback in the draft, but they aren’t going to go out of their way to find one. The Jaguars are a self-proclaimed BAP team, and frankly, they’ve shown that over the past 2 seasons. Gene Smith will take the guy at the top of the board, period.

Pete Prisco, of, said that the Jaguars should look into Christian Ponder for their first round selection. I would like to ask Mr. Prisco, why? The Jaguars have more urgent needs on the other side of the ball. That argument only even applies if we’re talking about needs drafting, as Mr. Prisco seems to be doing, and as any Jaguars fan knows, that’s not how Gene Smith uses his picks.

The fact of the matter is that the Jaguars will be drafting whoever is at the top of their board when it’s their turn to pick, and it will likely be a defensive player. The Jaguars have a strong need to address their defense this offseason, and the draft seems to be loaded with defensive talent at the top end. That makes the opportunity for the Jaguars to make a big gain through the draft even greater this year than most.
